Sadly, I think that's the case for a lot of airlines, though. At least from my experience, and I've been on a LOT of planes, lol! Rome is awesome, isn't it? I loved it there. I would actually love to return again so I can continue taking in the sights. I've now been to Italy three times, and it's one of my favourite countries to visit. I wasn't so keen on Germany, but I can imagine Frankfurt is a lot better than East Berlin. Don't be too envious of your friends for the stop-over in Frankfurt - put it this way, all they saw was the inside of an airport. And those are all much of a muchness! Wow, that sounds so stressful! It really depends if you landed on their "good grace" days. I hate flying with united as well. That's definitely inconsiderate to not want to spend 15 minutes to transfer luggage.
